On Profitable Dying
Fools are skilled to count money, but the same are incompetent to number their days. Not so the wise man; for remembering Psalm 90:10, the noble soul practices 1st Corinthians 7:29-31.
He is a wise man, the one who disciplines his heart for a virtuous Christian life on earth; for in so doing, he prepares his soul for a noble death.
He that prepares not for death before his last sickness is like him that begins to study philosophy an hour before disputing publicly; the man is foolish!
Dear reader, it is a great art to die well, but this art must be learned by men in good health!
Will you prepare for noble dying? This requires constant study and skill, time and understanding, and much exertions in the ways of Godliness.
To as many as neglect repentance today? Do you suppose to repent when taken a sickling tomorrow? What! Upon your death bed, when your soul must needs turn gruesome, amazed, timorous and weak in stature? GOD help you.
Be warned, all you that are healthy and full of life and vigour today: prepare to die before the sick hour takes hold of you tomorrow! For that fabricated repentance upon the sick bed, when a man is above half dead, when he can exercise no rational act of his own and understanding, it must needs be nothing; irrespective of what men will pretend!
Who should read and study these things? Not dying men of course, but those in good health and sound stature. Friends, prepare for noble dying while the day is still called today.
A sick bed is a school of severe exercise, in which the spirit of a man is tried and his graces are rehearsed or his foolishness is perfected. Prepare for noble dying while still in good health.
Reader, be careful how you spend your days of life; for time will soon pass, and death and eternity shall creep apace when man shall no more have anything to do under the sun!
